All my boas are fed dead rats or mice bought and kept in deep-frozen state. They are thawed for 24 hours before the boas are fed.

 Al mijn boa's krijgen slechts dode ratten of muizen te eten. Deze worden gekocht in diepgevroren toestand en vóór het voeren gedurende 24 uur ontdooid.

The male does not want any attention when he is feeding. He is hence fed in a closed box. In this case in the company of three dead thawed rats. Male in feeding box / Mannetje in voedingsdoos Het mannetje wenst geen aandacht tijdens de maaltijd. Hij wordt daarom tegen etenstijd in een doos opgesloten, in dit geval samen met drie dode, ontdooide ratten.
To keep an eye on the feeding process of the male the tailes of the dead rats are fed through holes in the side of the box. Keeping an eye on the feeding male / Letten op het mannetje Om een oogje in het zeil te houden worden de staarten van de ratten door kleine openingen naar buiten geleid.
At feeding time the boas are usually placed on a stepladder or on the branches suspended from the ceiling of our room.

Note the brown ceiling of wood slats  and the change over to the  curtain.

The dead rat is first moved at some distance below the head of the snake to obtain its attention by letting the boa smell its potential prey. 		the smell of the prey / de geur van de prooi
 Tegen etenstijd wordt de boa meestal op een keukentrap gezet of op een van de takken die aan het plafond hangen.


Let op het houten schrootjes plafond en de overgang op het gesloten gordijn.

De dode rat wordt dan op enige afstnad onder de kop van de boa heen en weer bewogen om via de geur van de prooi de aandacht te trekken.
The snake has been attended on its prey and follows it now visually. Visual tracking / Volgen met de ogen
 De boa heeft de prooi in de gaten gekregen en gebruikt nu de ogen om zich er op te richten.
The young boa is eagerly interested and its muscles are tensed.
Note that it is tonguing.

The background has been smoothed.		 Tense / Gespannen aandacht De jonge boa is heel erg geïnteresseerd. Het dier is heel gespannen en tongelt heftig.

De achtergrond is bijgewerkt.
The prey is often patiently inspected. Close inspection of the prey / Inspectie De prooi wordt dikwijls uiterst geduldig en in detail geïnspecteerd.
The prey is also tongued into detail.

Note that the snake takes its time to thoroughly inspect the prey. A live prey may use the occasion to sprint away. This usually does not happen since the prey may inspect the snake in turn.		 The prey is tongued / Betongelen
 De prooi wordt ook uitvoerig betongeld.

De boa neemt alle tijd voor de inspectie. Een levende prooi kan daarvan gebuik maken door te ontsnappen. Meestal gebeurt dat niet omdat de prooi op zijn beurt de slang inspecteert.

When the snakes is about sated, then the strike slowes down quite much. The dead prey is approached with some reluctance.
 
The picture is out of focus.		 Slow strike, blurred / Bijna verzadigd Wanneer de slang bijna verzadigd is, neemt de snelheid van de slag sterk af.
De dode prooi wordt "met lange tanden" benaderd.

De foto is onscherp.
The snake is about sated and it is questionable if the boa will eat the dead mouse. Slow grasp / Langzaam pakken De slang is verzadigd en het is maar de vraag of het dier het dode muisje op zal eten.
The young boa has not yet learned that it does not need to use a stranglehold on dead prey. Stranglehold / Wurggreep De jonge boa heeft nog niet geleerd dat het niet nodig is een dode prooi in de wurggreep te nemen.
The adult female has the dead rabbit just in a hold. She does not apply the stranglehold unless I shake the prey shortly after the strike. Dead rabbit in a sling / Dood konijn vasthouden Het volwassen vrouwtje houdt het dode konijn in een houdgreep. Zij past de wurggreep alleen nog toe wanneer ik de prooi direct na de slag stevig schudt.

Stranglehold, hold, hold in a sling / Drie boa's Drie boa's met hun prooi. De linker slang heeft de dode rat gedeeltelijk in een wurggreep. De twee andere boa's hebben hun prooien in een houdgreep.
This boa already had one dead rat in a hold and she then struck another one keeping it in her mouth only. She is moving the second prey up to put it in a hold.

The background of this picture has been replaced.		 two dead rats in a hold / Twee ratten in de houdgreep Deze boa heeft al een dode rat in de houdgreep en sloeg daarop een andere die haar werd aangeboden. De laatste rat hield zij uitluitend met de bek vast. Op het moment van de foto bewoog zij de rat omhoog om die ook in een houdgreep te nemen.

De foto is op een andere achtergrond gezet.
A younger boa with two dead prey. The first one, the black rat, is just kept in a hold, while the second prey is kept in the jaws only. De eerste wordt alleen in een houdgreep gehouden, de tweede slechts in de bek.
The female struck both rat and mitten (the lower part of the background of this picture has been replaced).

Never offer a prey with the use of bare hands only!

It is easy to move the hand out of the mitten and this does not disturb the snake.		 She caught both rat and mitten / Rat plus handschoen gepakt Het vrouwtje sloeg zowel de rat als de handschoen (het onderste deel van de achtergrond is veranderd).

Biedt nooit een prooi aan zonder handschoenen te gebruiken!

Als de handschoen is gegrepen is  het makkelijk de hand er uit te trekken zonder de slang te verstoren.
Another strike on both rat and mitten.

The snake never consumes the mitten. A boa always lets the mitten fall at some time during the process.		 The same / Idem Een andere slag op zowel rat als handschoen.

Een boa begint nooit aan de handschoen maar laat die altijd te eniger tijd los.
A wrong strike on a dead prey.
If it was alive than the snake is in danger since the prey may bite and even kill it.		 A wrong strike / Een gevaarlijke slag Een foute slag. Gelukkig gaat het om dode prooi.
Een levende rat zou nu de slang ernstig kunnen verwonden.

In case of a living prey it could bite the boa in the neck.		 Another dangerous catch / Een andere gevaarlijke slag. Een andere gevaarlijke slag.
Als de prooi zou leven dan zou die de boa in de hals kunnen bijten.
Two strikes were on the glove only and missed the rat.
The third strike involved the rat only. This one was small enough to consume without ado.

De derde slag was op de rat die zonder meer werd opgepeuzeld.

Note how "handy" boa constrictors are. It suspends itself from a branch, keeps two gloves in opposing holds, moreover keeping one in a clockwise and the other in a counterclockwise grip, while consuming its "third" prey.		 straight eyes stereo / staren stereo Als boven,

Let er op hoe handig boa constrictors zijn. Het dier hangt zich van een tak, houdt twee handschoenen vast als je met de hand doet (opponeren van duim tegenover de vingers) bovendien respectievelijk tegen de klok in en met de klok mee, terwijl het ondertussen de "derde" rat consumeert.
